Muscadine ResveratrolThe Connection Between Resveratrol and Muscadine GrapesRecent research has shown that certain grapes contain a high concentration of resveratrol, especially the grape variety Muscadine. Resveratrol appears to possess anti-cancer properties as well as properties which fight cardiac disease, and may in fact serve to extend the lifespan of mammalian organisms. What is Resveratrol?Resveratrol is a chemical found in high concentration in the skins of red grapes, and is one of the ingredients of kojokon, an oriental medicine used to treat diseases of the blood vessels, liver, and heart. It has been gaining much attention of late within the scientific community as an anti-oxidant and anti-cancer agent. What Are Muscadine Grapes? The muscadine grape (also known as Bullace, Scuppernong, Southern Fox Grape) is native to the Southeastern United States, and is found in the wild from Delaware to the Gulf of Mexico, and westward from Missouri to Texas. The muscadine grape produces resveratrol in response to diseases that attack the grapes or other environmental stress factors acting on the plant. This muscadine-resveratrol-stress connection has been well-studied. One study showed that when plants producing the muscadine grape were protected from disease and insects through the use of sprays, the level of resveratrol decreased. Muscadine resveratrol concentration in the skins of the grape is higher than in the seed, and much higher than in the juice and pulp. This is why red wines in general contain much more resveratrol than white wines, since the skins of the grapes in red wine are left in the wine during the fermentation process for a much longer period of time than the skin of grapes used to make white wine. The skin of the muscadine grape typically contains between 50-100 micrograms of resveratrol per gram. Print this | Send this | Hits: 1914 | |
